CONFIGURING WAREHOUSE SPACE CAN BE CHALLENGING
One of the most common warehouse challenges is space. Regardless of what type of space you are designing, well-executed storage, receiving and shipping spaces improve efficiency and make companies more profitable.
Did You Know That Most Companies Can Gain 25% More Space in the Same Footprint? And there are many ways to make use of that existing space:
•Mezzanines and Inplant Offices - With the proper vertical clearance, mezzanines can easily double floor space, providing additional room for storage and offices. Both modular offices and mezzanine can be considered depreciable personal property allowing depreciation life of 5 or 7 years and may quality for a bonus depreciation deduction. In addition, buildouts are faster and less expensive.
•Adjusted Aisle Width - There are numerous factors to consider in configuring aisle width. Wide aisles may make it easy for your current forklift, but aisles can go as narrow as 54” with specialty forklifts to better utilize floor space
•Dock Configurations - Operations are unique - so are dock solutions. There are numerous options to consider when designing docks.
•Racking - Whether it be high- density storage or specialized shelving to hold more pallets, the right type of storage and racking can make a dramatic difference in someone’s operations.
When moving to high-density storage, it is important to evaluate priorities in terms of density, selectivity and overall costs. For example, increasing density can often mean decreasing selectivity, so it is critical to find the balance that works for your operational needs.
Things to consider:
- How many SKUs do you have?
- What storage capacity do you have vs. what you need for growth?
- What issues do you have today that need addressed?
- What are your product turns?
- What is the pallet flow?
- Do you case pick, piece pick, or pull full pallets?
- What type of pallets do you use?
- Do you follow LIFO or FIFO?
The goal is to determine the right balance of cost, density and selectivity to do more in the same space and be as efficient as possible.
